Benefits of IGT Copper Tubes
Here are the main benefits of inner grooved copper tubes (IGT), mostly used in air conditioner and refrigeration coils.
Performance benefits
More heat transfer area. The spiral fins inside the tube increase the inside surface area compared to a smooth tube. Based on my earlier estimates, that is roughly 30–60 % more for typical sizes, but the real figure depends on the fin count and angles.
Better heat transfer in operation. The grooves create turbulence and break up the insulating film of refrigerant on the tube wall. In evaporators they also help the liquid spread up the walls, so more of the surface stays wet. Many manufacturers claim noticeably higher heat transfer than smooth tubes, often in the range of 20–50 %.
Higher energy efficiency. Better heat transfer lets an air conditioner reach the same cooling with less compressor work, which can improve its efficiency rating (EER or SEER).
Design and cost benefits
Smaller, lighter coils. The same capacity can be achieved with shorter tube lengths or smaller heat exchangers, so the unit uses less copper and fits into compact designs.
Less refrigerant needed. Smaller internal volume in the coil can reduce the refrigerant charge.
Thin walls, low weight. IGT is made with thin walls, such as the 0.22 to 0.34 mm walls in your table. That keeps weight and material cost down.
Benefits that come from copper itself
High thermal conductivity. Copper moves heat better than most other metals used for tubing.
Corrosion resistance. It lasts well in refrigerant systems.
Easy to form and join. It bends, flares and brazes reliably when handled correctly.
Fully recyclable. Scrap and used tubes keep their value.
Trade-offs worth knowing
Slightly higher pressure drop. The grooves add flow resistance, so the coil design should allow for it.
Careful handling. Thin walls and fins need clean, correct bending and flaring, and clean refrigerant and oil.
